VAGINAL REJUVENATION: HYMENOPLASTY
The hymen ('maidenhead') is a highly variable fold of mucosa, much like the vagina in
texture, situated at the true entrance of the vagina. While its 'intactness' may denote a
virginal state, it is so variable in its character that it may be completely absent even in
virgins; many women have a considerable amount of hymenal 'remnants' present even
after years of sexual intercourse. Furthermore, the hymen may be disrupted during
physical activity such as horseback riding and gymnastics, with little or no awareness.
Reconstruction of the hymenal remnants (hymenoplasty or hymenorrhaphy) is performed
by reattaching the various delicate membrane-like segments, in order to cover
over the vaginal entry, at least partially. The degree to which such attachment is possible
is determined mostly by the amount and quality of hymenal remnants remaining.
Menstrual flow is unimpeded, and the patient may even continue to use small tampons
after healing is complete.
Dr. Shuell will be able to inform you of your options with regard to hymenal reconstruction
after a brief, painless evaluation. It is pleasing to note that there is usually a minimum
of discomfort associated with the procedure and healing is rapid, thanks to the excellent
blood supply of the lower reproductive tract and a very gentle handling of your
tissues.
